We're delighted to open up Susan's China Cabinet once more for the newest addition to our dinnerware-inspired collections: Tobacco Leaf. Designed to mimic the iconic tobacco leaf porcelain that has graced carefully-set tablescapes for centuries, our newest pieces make the perfect gift for the hostesses and antique lovers in your life.
One of the earliest Famille Rose patterns, the Tobacco Leaf design originated from China during the 18th century Qing dynasty. It was primarily produced for export to Brazilian and Portuguese markets, though original 18th-century pieces are rare collector's items. One Tobacco Leaf-patterned platter from circa 1785 recently sold for over $3,000 at auction through Sotheby's.
Despite this pattern’s name, the florals depicted are likely not from the tobacco plant. The tobacco plant was actually largely unknown in Asia at the time this design originated, and a quick glance at a blooming tobacco plant will show little similarity. Instead, the plant depicted is most likely a passion flower or hibiscus. Americans who were exposed to the design likely mistook the design’s broad, serrated leaves as a tobacco leaf, hence the commonly-known name.
Pierre L. Dobomy, an expert and author on Tobacco Leaf porcelain, has cataloged 38 different variations of the pattern, though the number in existence is likely much higher. However, almost every variation features a large yellow leaf and a central pink bloom. Some versions also feature a phoenix representing rebirth and prosperity.
Our recreation of the revered Tobacco Leaf pattern in pendant form was carefully designed from pieces in Susan’s personal collection. Our plate-inspired pendants have been instant best-sellers — don't miss out on our newest addition to the China Cabinet, available now.
