The storied history of the derby comes to life every year on the first Saturday in May. Seas of seersucker and elegant hats flock to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky each year to bet on this famous horse race. A time honored tradtion, the Kentucky Derby is the longest running sporting event in the United States!

In 1872, the derby dream was born when Meriwether Lewis Clark attended the Epsom Derby in England and made friends with the French Jockey Club of the Grand Prix de Paris Longchamps. That trip sparked a mission to create an American spectacle, and on May 17th, 1895, Clark's dream became a reality with the opening of a racetrack and start of the first Kentucky Derby.

The run for the roses brings not only a fascinating horse race, but a show of extravagant fashion and prestigious attendants. Southern style is abound with seersucker, pearls, bowties and hats gracing the stands of this renowned event. Classic Mint Julep Recipe

Ingredients needed:

Fresh mint
2 ounces bourbon
1/4 ounce simple syrup(makes 1 cocktail)

Prep

1. In a Julep cup, lightly muddle mint leaves
in simple syrup.

2. Add bourbon and pack the glass tightly with ice.

3. Stir until cup is frosted on the outside.

4. Garnish with more mint!
